| Location: Logan,Ut,United States Member Since: Jul 14, 2013 Gender: Male Goal Type: Other Running Accomplishments: My very first race was the Top of Utah Half Marathon. I finished in 01:29:45. Even though it wasn't amazing, I took 3rd place in my age division which was a huge accomplishment for myself. After that I did a large amount of 5 and 10K's, Ragnar's, etc. In 2012 I put together and Ultra Ragnar Team. After this I started to focus on shorter races and worked towards running track with Utah State University. As I was getting close to running with the team, I met Cody Draper. He introduced me to trail running....I'm now a trail runner! Just did my first ultra marathon two weeks ago...Logan Peak. I finished in 5th place and got under my goal of 5 hours.
Short-Term Running Goals: In the next two years, I'd like to run a 50K and a 50 miler. If those two races go well, I'd like to do the Bear 100 in 2 years from this summer. Long-Term Running Goals: I'm not sure how much of a goal this is...it's more of a wish that's way towards the stars. I'd like to eventually get good enough that I have offers to be sponsored as a runner. But my actual long term goals are:
1. A 100 miler 2. Win an ultra marathon. 3. Be apart of the 80 year old marathon runner club Personal: I'm single! The only exciting thing going on in my life is I'm getting into trail running! |

| Did a slow and easy run today. Went from my house over to Sky View and looped back to the house. Saw something very weird and disgusting....for about a mile stretch during my run, there were....no joke, around 50 squished mice on the road. My guess is they needed warmth so they all went to sleep on the road then....death. It was a pretty disgusting sight honestly.

| Watched a video that Sage Canaday put together talking about the importance of taking easy days easy. So, I forced myself to run slower. Went from my place towards campus, looped out towards 10th west. Headed to YESCO....in the process of this I saw good ol' Dennis Jensen outside. So I stopped and we chatted a good 15 minutes. Funny guy with a nasty beard now. Easy run

| Worked 40 hours already this week so I was able to take today off. I met up with Cody at his house and we went for a long run. He had to be somewhere at 10:30 so we needed to be done by 9:30. We left from his house and headed up some random roads towards the canal trail by the temple. We took that to first dam then took BST over to Green. We headed up green for about 3 miles then turn around and took the same route back basically. At first dam we headed behind the water lab and took some random roads back. We were hauling after the water lab. Kept 6:40 pace for 3 miles. I was pretty darn tired. Very good training run.

| Did a slow and easy long run today. Went from my house up to the BST and headed over to first dam. Then I did the First to Prov run via Deer Fence that Cody, Fan and myself do so much. Along deer fence I saw a dead deer...completely devoured by what appeared to be a mtn. lion (mtn. lion tracks). Use the new Pearl Izumi M2 on the run. They were amazing like always!

| Wasn't going to run today...but Cody told me Prov Canyon was amazing so I gave in. Stated at the church he usually starts at and headed up to the Cattle Guard. I was extremely sore, tired, and felt some pain in my groin. Took it very slow. My watch was acting funny and died so I didn't get everything. It was 8 miles, about 1 hour and 17 minutes and around 1700 ft of climbing.

| Cody and I heard that Jardine Juniper was runable. So, we threw on our spikes and hit the trail. The lower 1.5 miles was ICY. Like, really icy. The middle was awesome. The top was snowy. The snowshoes stopped about 3.5 miles up. So, we headed down a new section (followed the snow shoes) and it looped us to the river crossing on the normal trail. So, we headed back up one more time then headed down. My spikes were falling apart everywhere....1 run and they are finished. Ugh

| Today's weather was AMAZING. Like, so amazing. I had to take advantage of it....ran in shorts and a t-shirt. Went from my place and headed to the N. Logan cemetary. Then took the BST over to Cedar Hill in Hyde Park....I headed straight up it and explored around the area. Then headed down the north trail of Cedar and cut off into some random field (the trail here...and most of the trail was MUDDY and snowy...mostly muddy). I then wrapped around to the entry of Dry Canyon and headed down to the roads of Smithfield (I refused to head back in that mud). I then took the roads back home. Fun and muddy day

| Went to Antelope Island today with Cody and Fan. It felt like spring....so nice. We were planning on doing 30....Fan kept it shorter and did 20 because he doesn't want to over do it for his race. Cody and I got to mile 17 and Cody's IT band started to hurt.....so he hitched a ride back. I wanted to finish so I kept going. Around mile 21 Cody and Fan showed up in my car and kind of "crewed" me. I was planning on finishing....but, it was dark...and right after Cody and Fan said hi, I heard coyotes howling. Between that and knowing buffalo were around me (but mostly the coyotes) I decided to call it a night. 24.4 was a good day. Poor Cody. Hope he gets better.

| No classes or work today. Took advantage of the day off and the sun and went for a long run. Started out feeling fresh. Started at green and took BST over to first then headed up logan canyon. I took the canal and river trail up towards crimson trail and did crimson. Then I crossed the highway and did the wind caves/beirdneau trail. About .5 miles from the top of the beirdneau trail it got muddy and snowy so I turned around and added the entire wind caves trail to my run. Then I headed back across the highway, up crimson again and back. I also added 1.5 miles of spring hollow. I was only planning on 24ish miles....so, I didn't have any food. I was pretty darn bonked. Great and pretty February run

| Today was the Red Mountain 50K. I was very excited for this race coming into it. I felt in shape, felt like I tapered perfectly, and was ready to place in the top 3.
The race was in St. George. Starting out, it was pretty chilly. I was just in my race jersey and shorts. So, I was extra cold. Low 40's was the temp. The race started, and I was up front leading the pack alongside Logan (not sure his last name....on the race team and Cody Draper used to run with him). My heart rate was 165 so I knew I should have slowed down....but, I felt good and wanted to stay up front. But after a mile I decided that I wasn't going to be stupid....I slowed down and got my heart rate to 157 and kept it around there. The course was super confusing. There were different colored loops and they all came back to the same aid station....5 loops to be exact. There was a 30K and a half marathon going on at the same time and we all had different loops at different times. The loops were very close to each other....so I'd see some random person in front of me...try to catch up, then find out that they were on a different loop. So, really, I had no idea what place I was in for the entire race. At one point I tripped on a rock, scraped my hand up and broke the strap on my water bottle holder...that ticked me off. The scenery was great. Such a pretty area. Come the final 10 miles, I saw someone in front of me that I knew was doing the 50K...he was about 2 minutes in front of me...and I was going to catch him. I wanted 6th place (I thought I was in 7th). After the last aide station, I flew out and tried to catch him. He was about thirty seconds in front of me. After he went arond a corner, I came around and followed the arrows to the right. Had another hill to climb...WHAT?! I could have sworn that it was flat til the finish. After I came over the little hill, I started running down and looked around. The course looked extremely familiar. I looked over and saw a green flag...what?! That was the color of the first loop. I went the wrong way. Gosh danget! I probably only did an exra .50 mile. So I lost about 4 minutes. I pushed myself as hard as I could to the finish...bonked a little....but as I crossed the finish line, I found out I finished 3rd! Sweet....top 3! The guy in front of me finished 3 minutes before me....so, I could have potenitally passed him.....ugh. But, it was a fun race and beautiful day. Next up, Zion 100!

Up and down a ridge in Smithfield (a couple ridges). The race was only 8 miles....it ended on top of the mountain so the 10 miles is from the 2 mile run down the mountain after the race. I finished in 2nd. Erik was first. It was fun run. Glad I joined. Also, I finally beat Cody! Too bad he's injured and it wasn't an official race....didn't really feel the glory I was expecting

| Today was the day. My second 100 mile race. I came into this one feeling pretty confident and ready. My knee was feeling good. I've been training hard. Had a good pre-race meal at Red Robin. Life was good.
The race started at 6 a.m. and went up the first mesa. For this section I met a man named Adam. We stuck with each other for a good 10 miles (he later won the race). It was nice having a buddy to talk to for that long. I was about 5 minutes behind first place by the time I reached the Dalton Wash aid station (mile 15). My dad was there waiting for me. What a guy. Dedicated a whole day, by himself, to help me out. By the time I left, I met a gentleman named DJ. He was awesome. We became best friends instantly. Stuck with each other from mile 15 to mile 75 pretty much. Every aid station we came in within 5 minutes of each other.
After we lefrt Dalton, we headed up to another Mesa. It was pretty up there. Again, we were about 20 mintues behind first. We then headed back to Dalton, and I left DJ and headed towards Gooseberry. I was actually feeling really good at this point. When I got to that beast of a climb into Goosebump/Gooseberry, I made some good time and passed 2 100 mile runners. I was moving so quick I actually beat my dad to the aid station. However, the next 10ish miles was HELL. I hate running up on Gooseberry with a passion. Rolly, hard hard hard hard rock. It was destroying my back and legs. I had to walk a lot of this section.
By the time I got to the second Goosebump aid station, I met up with my dad. Then headed out towards Grafton with....DJ! He caught up. As we were heading down the first section of road from Goosebump to Grafton, I felt a big burst of energy and started flying down the hill.....but, that was short lived. At mile 45, I got a major side ache....that didn't leave me til mile 69. No joke, I had a side ache the entire time. I was worried I got a Cody disease....Rabdo. Every step my kidneys/side were in so much pain. I had to walk a lot. I got to Grafton and took a good 10 minute sit, hoping that my side ache would leave....it didn't.
I then headed to Cemetary...again, a lot of quick walking/running for a few seconds before my side hurt. Somehow, I wasn't getting passed. DJ passed me while I was sitting at Grafton for 10 minutes. The trail down into Cemetary was basically just as steep and rocky as the trail to Gooseberry. That destroyed my sides. I got to the Cemetary aid and quickly ate some food and left (wanted to make time on the climb out of Cemetary). DJ was taking a break at Cemetary. I didn't see DJ for any of the next section. The uphill saved me cause I was able to walk really fast. However, between Cemetary and Grafton on the way back, I puked 3 times. Threw up pickles each time. That took away so much energy. Couldn't breath well....felt terrible.
Got to Grafton, sat a little more, then headed out. Within 30 seconds of leaving Grafton, I was feeling very light headed, puky, low on energy, and my side ache was killing me. I stopped for a minute and contemplated dropping. I felt so terrible. But I kept going, and was able to do a waddle/run/walk on the way back to Gooseberry. I beat DJ by 1 minute to this station (mile 67). Ate Ramen, a sandwhich, and left. The decent from Gooseberry was TERRIBLE. Sore quads, sore side.....I felt even worse going down this. But, miraculously, by the time I reached the bottom, my side ache finally left, and I was able to start running.
I got to Virign Desert Aid feeling half decent. Got food, and headed out on the first loop. I again lost a lot of energy on this loop. My legs were in a lot of pain as well. Someone doing the 100 was right on my butt. But when I got back to Virgin, I took Ibuprofen, drank a RockStar, and headed out. I got a lot of energy back, my legs went numb, and I made up a lot of time. The guy behind me left two minutes after me....and I was able to get a 20 minute lead on him during the next loop. I was moving. I then made it back, and went out for the final loop. Went at an average pace.
Then, I reached the Virgin Aid for the last time, drank a Mtn. Dew, and hauled to the finish line. I was moving pretty quick for how I was feeling. I was determined to get under 20 hours. And I did just that. Even crossed the finish line before my dad could see me (he was taking a nap and didn't expect me to cross so soon).
This was a very tough race. Mentally, emotionally, and physically. But, 5th place.....under 20 hours, I'll take the results.

| Had the day off from work and school. Feeling decent....so, decided to do a long run with a good amount of climbing. I've been wanting to tag Berdineau peak for the past 5ish months. So, I decided to start at first dam, take BST over to green, and do the loop. I started out feeling fresh....but, got tired very quick. The traverse on the ridge towards Berdineau killed me. I went pretty slow. But, I finally tagged the peak. It's pretty up there. Not my favorite peak, but still awesome. Then I headed back, and then cut off towards the wind caves. I then went up to crimson, wrapped around, then headed back to first dam. Great run. Great day.

| Did a group run tonight. As much as I love racing, I will admit the main reason I hate racing is because I miss group runs due to tapering and recovering. It was great being with the group again. Zack, Cody, Fan, Erik and Nuckles. Did the Ricks and Steel canyon loop. I was struggling for the first 3-4 miles. Very tired. But towards the top, I felt fresh and was able to push it. The run down into steel was awesome. Top was snowy. Broke through the ice/snow and got cut up. But we were able to push it on the way down. Fun run

| Did the Ghost Town Sprint Tri today. Haha I was pretty nervous for it....cause of the 300 meter swim. I know 300 meters is super short....but, I suck at swimming. Part of me hoped that since I swam a couple years ago, I would be fine. Sure enough, after 30 seconds, I felt like I was going to drown. Had to take about 10 breaks. I'm a pathetic swimmer. I probably looked ridiculous on the bike....my mountain bike. Everyone else had their super nice bikes. But I actually went at a good pace. 15 miles at a 17 mph pace. Not amazing, but for my 3rd bike ride in a year, I feel good about it. The run I surprisingly did well. Thought I'd go slower cause of jello legs. But I maintained a 6:07 pace for a 5k. Finished 3rd in my division, and got the fastest run time award. When I got home, I went for a 5 mile post run. Good day

| Today was an interesting, yet fun day. Erik, Cody and I traveled to Southern Utah to run the Zion Traverse....west entrance to east entrance. Was looking forward to getting a tan and enjoying the views....but, the first 30ish miles were: rainy, snowy, cloudy, cold, wet....couldn't see any views. It definitely was a little frustrating. But I tried my best to make the most of it. Had the GoPro and got some pretty good footage. I actually was having so much fun at first that I didn't even feel the cold. But once we met the crew at mile 15, I got super cold. I definitely wanted to quit and crew with Beth and the kids. But I kept going. It eventually cleared up....around mile 35. Was able to get a view of the park as we descended towards Angels Landing and the bottom. It was so pretty. After we were crewed at The Groto, I actually was feeling great. So I pushed it on the East Rim climb. I eventually got to a turn off and waited for Cody and Erik so I didn't choose the wrong way. By the time I started again....I was feeling it....in the legs, and lower back. I slowed down a lot. My back hurt quite a bit. But the finish line finally came.....it was a great run. Definitely need to do it again when the weather is better.

| Did a run with the crew today...Erik and Cody. We did some random loops up around the Wellsville's. We started up towards the tower. The view up there was pretty sweet....very dark clouds, but the sun rise out towards the east was pretty amazing. We then headed over to Rattlesnake and started going up...it was such a wet, mud-fest. Then, towards the top....it was very cold and very snowy.....my jacket, which was wet from the rain....froze to my arms. So we headed down and more north. Did some random loops, bushwacking, mud-sliding, dodging snipers...it was fun

| Did the Noblesville Mini Marathon with Ethan today. Running at 700 ft is quite amazing....it was so easy to breathe. Ethan has been sick and hasn't been running....so he went a lot slower than he was capable. We did it in around 1 hour and 50 minutes. | Well today was the day. The Scout Mountain 100k. Trained a lot, and took the whole week off to be ready for it. My sleep wasn't the greatest the night before. But that didn't get me down.
At the start, I was feeling good. Nate and I were up towards the front of the pack. Things were looking good. We were going at a good pace, but also chatting and having fun. About 4 miles in Erik caught up to us and we all had a good 10 miles together. At the second aid station, Nate and I stopped to refuel and Erik took off. Between this aid station and the next, the start of some terrible pukes, back pain, and low energy began. Nate passed me and wished me luck. I knew I was in trouble. I seriously couldn't run.
From mile 17 to 37, I was low on energy, in terrible pain, and was puking up whatever I ate or drank. So naturally I got a little dehydrated (which took away even more energy). About mile 34 I had to get off the trail, lay down and stretch/close my eyes. "Well, come mile 40, I think I'm going to drop." But lucky for me, I got a little energy on mile 37, and Erik's wife Shannon wasn't at mile 40. Seriously, some weird energy came and I was able to pick up the pace. A few runners were asking how I was able to go so fast. So mile 37 to 53 was great. But, on top of Scout, I got a horrible side ache. I pushed myself for 2 miles and hoped it would go away...it didn't. So, I got off the trail, laid down and did some crunches. It helped! The side ache left. I was able to go at an average pace til the end.
This was definitely the hardest race I've done. Mentally, I was destroyed. Erik got 4th and Nate got 9th. Over at the Bryce 100, Cody got 1st. Glad everyone else had a great day.

| Went camping up Prov canyon last night with some friends....did a midnight hike with a girl....then got up at 6. Very tired for today's run. Nuckles parked at the bottom of prov, ran up while I ran down...then we met up, and headed up the mountain. We went from prov, all the way up to Logan Peak. Soaked in the view for a bit....then headed straight down the ridge to prov.
Went pretty slow. Bush--wacked some, slipped on rocks....very slow pace. Then we got to the bottom of prov and Nuckles left. I headed back up the trail to camp....got up to camp, and my hammock and car were gone...everyone was gone. I had no idea what to do....so, I walked down the road. They were parked in the parking lot with my car. Apparently they wanted to help me...so they parked by the Deer Fence trail and was gonna give me a ride. But....we missed each other. Oh well

| Today was the Logan Peak race. I was a little worried starting out. Didn't get a lot of sleep the night before. But my pre-race dinner was great (burger, fries and a brownie) and my breakfast was great (donut and a smootie).
The race started on time....and right away, I was slightly worried about my pace....I was leading. This was definitely the most I've actually ran up Dry Canyon. I walk a lot of it. My heart rate was averaging 174 on the way up.....but, I told myself I could keep that pace. After about 1 hour and 15 minutes, a guy from Pennsylvania (he has never lost a race) passed me. He got out of sight. Cody, Erik and myself would rotate back and forth. About 3 miles from the Peak, Cody pulled ahead.
On the road up to the Peak, Erik started gaining on me as well. As the three passed me on the way down, I could see we were all pretty evenly split. I had hopes of catching them.
But, I pushed myself a little too much at the start. I ended up in 4th place. If that Pennsylvania guy didn't show up, Cody, Erik and myself would've had our podium finishes. Oh well, next year maybe. With how I've been feeling lately, I'm super happy with the outcome.

This past week, I've averaged 4 hours of sleep a night.....I woke up with a major headache. So, got a Red Bull to keep me going. After the run, got some chocolate milk and mtn dew....I'm so healthy. I surprisingly did well. We pushed ourselves fairly well up....and back. I fell behind on the way down. But made some ground and pretty much caught up by the finish. Great views. Had a lot of fun.

| Decided today at work that I wanted to do 100 miles of training this week. Did the green canyon/preston valley/logan river trail loop. Went up Preston Valley at a solid pace...ran the whole way...Erik's CR is amazing. Gonna be hard to beat. The trail down into the wind caves is very overgrown...very hard to pick up speed. Tom met me at the bottom of the wind caves and ran to green with me. Great start this week.

| Did Monday's loop but backwards. I was up ALL night itching my freaking body. Got about 2 hours of sleep. Took some benadril at work just before I went running. I was very zoned out. It was super difficult to get moving. On the way up the trail above the wind caves, I saw my first rattle snake of the year. Had about 6 rattles. Thing didn't even hiss or rattle at me. Needless to say, for the rest of the way up...in the very overgrown grass....I was super nervous. Today was much slower than Monday. Still looking strong for 100 miles!

| Surprisingly, my legs were able to move quick today. Did the green canyon half marathon. Went very fast. This is my 4th time doing this run, and the first time I did the whole thing under an average 8 minute mile. Nice, difficult pace!

| Did my favorite cache valley run....the "Northern Utah High Country Traverse" (high creek to green canyon). Erik joined me. The wild flowers up High creek lake were SO pretty. The view on top of Cherry Creek was amazing. The slight breeze around Naomi and Tony Grove was incredible. The cold water spring was awesome. The views from the 7 sisters and Mt. Elmer were amazing. The run down into Green....was difficult. Amazing run. Glad Erik could join. My freaking watch didn't separate my moving time from my elapsed time. Annoying

| Went camping at White Pine lake last night with Jordan, Austin and Sarah. My cousin Tom wanted to meet at Tony Grove at 6:30 to join me for some miles. So, I left White Pine at six and headed up to Tony grove. On my way over.....I saw my first bobcat. It was pretty freaky...especially when it disappeared after I took my eyes off it for 5 seconds. We went from Tony Grove to Blind hollow...went down, came back up, then headed over to the ridge above smithfield canyon...cut over to Naomi...then headed down. Beast of a run. Tom did great.

| Today was awesome, and crappy. Decided to try a new loop: The Bovine Sincline. A loop up the face of the mtn. south of Prov Canyon, which loops over to the waterfall up Prov Canyon, then heads down to the parking lot. I decided to be ambitious and do it twice. Cody bet I couldn't do it in under 4 hours. Had to prove him wrong. The first loop rocked. Did it in an hour and 55 minutes. I had energy, adrenaline, and motivation. But....I had 1 bottle of water...total. I had to make that last for both loops. On the way up the face the 2nd time....I bonked....HARD. I felt like I was going to pass out a couple of times. On the way down Prov to the waterfall, I decided to head a different way, thinking it would be better than the first way I went down. Boy....I was wrong. The road just ended. I didn't want to head back up. So I tried cutting across. It was terrible. Very steep, very rocky, very bushy.....it was awful. I fell and broke my 40 dollar water bottle. I popped out above a waterfall that I didn't know was up Prov....I thought there were only two....now I know there is three. I was so thirsty....so, I observed the waterfall...it looked like it came out of the mountain. So, I drank a lot. It felt great. I didn't get under 4 hours....maybe next time

| Sarah ran the TOU half today. I wanted to support her at the finish line. So, I got up at 4:00 a.m. and went on a run to Logan Peak. Went up Prov Canyon, took the ridge over to the peak, then headed down the road. I was feeling pretty good. Did it 10 minutes faster than last time. I was pretty nervous going up. Super dark. Saw a lot of eyes reflecting in my headlamp. I survived though so that's good.
Sarah finished in 1 hour and 54 minutes. I'm so proud!

| Today was the day. The Wasatch 100. I felt like I trained super hard for this day and went to sleep feeling prepared. But then I woke up....
I woke up with a cough. Stuffy nose. Hard to breath. Chest hurt..... I was a little worried.
The race began promptly at 5 a.m. I could tell this race was gonna be a struggle. I was having a very hard time breathing. But, I had hope...especially after I hit my first aid station at the exact time I was shooting for...like to the minute. But as soon as I left, it was like my energy and breathing capability stayed at the aid station. I couldn't get moving. Slowed down a lot. Coming into mile 39 where I was gonna meet Cody was a little better. I got some wind. However, it quickly left.
About 1 mile after Cody and I left, I started cramping A LOT. Was super dehydrated. Felt like I was having heat stroke. Could barely move without my leg cramping. Cody had to help me out a lot. I was super negative and ready to quit. If it wasn't for him, I would have. At one point I started breathing really heavily and felt like passing out. But Cody was doing an awesome job at keeping me cool and pushing me. Eventually, I started feeling better as we were decending down the climb after lambs canyon. I stopped cramping, and got some wind.
It left on and off until Brighton. Brighton was a struggle....Cody left, and Nate joined. Climbing out of Brighton, Nate was doing a great job pushing me...but I was so tired.
But after the final climb, we cranked up the heat...something happend. We made up A LOT of time. Passed about 10 people. We were hauling. Erik gave me some motivation at the aid station he was running.
Long story short....we made up a lot of time, but, unfortunately, got lost at a few junctions. Between my bonking, and getting lost, I missed under 24 by 14 minutes. But, I'm still proud with my performance. I had some awesome pacers.

| Well....I got into the Bear....but, after 30 seconds of running, I realized I made a huge mistake.
I started the race feeling sick still....and had NO energy. It was painful to run downhill. Low energy for uphill. Just a mess.
I was going to quit at Right Hand, but my cousin Tom took a day off from work to pace me. So, I decided to be nice and give him some miles.
We made it to the middle of Blind Hollow, and really decided it was time to quit. He tried talking me out of it, but I had my mind set. I especially had it set when we got about 2 miles away....severe back pain which ended up feeling like nerve damage....pain in my left butt and left quad. Couldn't stand up straight or run the downhill into Tony Grove. I was a mess. A little too ambitious trying this.
