Running Accomplishments:

My very first race was the Top of Utah Half Marathon.  I finished in 01:29:45.  Even though it wasn't amazing, I took 3rd place in my age division which was a huge accomplishment for myself.  After that I did a large amount of 5 and 10K's, Ragnar's, etc.  In 2012 I put together and Ultra Ragnar Team.  After this I started to focus on shorter races and worked towards running track with Utah State University.  As I was getting close to running with the team, I met Cody Draper.  He introduced me to trail running....I'm now a trail runner!  Just did my first ultra marathon two weeks ago...Logan Peak.  I finished in 5th place and got under my goal of 5 hours.

Short-Term Running Goals:

In the next two years, I'd like to run a 50K and a 50 miler.  If those two races go well, I'd like to do the Bear 100 in 2 years from this summer.

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm not sure how much of a goal this is...it's more of a wish that's way towards the stars.  I'd like to eventually get good enough that I have offers to be sponsored as a runner. But my actual long term goals are:

1. A 100 miler   2.  Win an ultra marathon.  3.  Be apart of the 80 year old marathon runner club

Personal:

I'm single!  The only exciting thing going on in my life is I'm getting into trail running!

Today was my first Ultra Marathon!  Haha it was also my first race over 20 miles (maybe should have trained a little more).  But it went a lot better than planned.  My goal for this race was to finish in 5:30:00.  I beat it by almost 45 minutes!  For the first part of the race, I was in fifth place.  Then by about mile 10, I dropped down to 8th place.  I wasn't sore or super tired....just trying to save some energy.  Once we got to the peak, I looked at the valley for about 5 seconds, then began my descent.  I was booking it.  I unfortunately forgot about the north sincline...that was a huge slap to the face.  But at this point, I moved back up to 6th place.  I thought the runner in 5th place was far ahead of me.  But, at the last aid station, I was told he was just a minute ahead of me.  That gave me quite a bit of adrenaline and energy. So, I took off. With about two miles to go, I flew past another runner, and got back into fifth.  I was stoked!  Everything was a breeze at this point....except for the last half mile in the sun.  That really drained me and took all my energy right away.  But, I finished in fifth.  I couldn't be more happy with the results.  This is definitely getting me excited to try bigger and more challenging races.  Thanks Cody and Joe for introducing me to this!

Today was my first 50 K!  It was super fun and pretty.  I went with Cody and Joe.  Those two are animals.  We started out at the mouth of Cherry Creek Canyon.  The first six miles I definitely wasn't feeling the greatest.  For some reason early morning runs really get to me.  Once we got to Mount Naiomi, I was feeling much better.  We then began our descent down towards Tony Grove Lake.  Once we got there, we headed back up the south west side of the lake.  During this section, it started to rain on us.  Cody was leading us and decided to wait it out under some trees.  After about three minutes of waiting, the rain stopped, and we started up again.  After about a mile, we reached the seven sisters and began our journey across them.  Joe was feeling kind of sore so he continued as Cody and I went to the top of Mt Elmer.  We caught up to Joe at the top of Green canyon, and headed down the trail. At this point, there was a blister on my big toe that popped and started to bleed.  The made it kind of hard to run.  My toe was actually in a lot of pain. But all three of us eventually made it.  Cody and Joe are super fun to run with.  Definitely glad that I went on this run.

For the past 3 weeks, I've been injured and haven't done much running.  I've mostly been doing some mountain biking to stay active.  But today I decided to try a run out.  I did green canyon (from king nature park to the fence and back).  The temperature actually wasn't too hot....especially for a 4 p.m run.  I'm happy to report my foot no longer hurts! Time to get back into running shape.  For taking about three weeks off, I felt pretty good.  Not a lot happened

Again, did green canyon.  Usually on Wednesday nights I go for a longer run with Cody and Joe.  But Cody is gone on a scouting trip so I just stuck with green.  About 30 minutes after my run, my friends and I mountain biked green canyon.  Ha I felt that one.  Excited to be running again!!

I didn't do Green!!  Ha I finally did something different.  Cody, Joe and I went and did nine miles of Birch Canyon.  That was my first time up this canyon.  It was super pretty.  We did a fairly decent pace.  Cody is still feeling a little sick and all three of us are doing Loco this weekend.  Great to run with those guys again!

Today was my first official 50 K!  This course was by far the prettiest area I've ever ran in.  The first 15 miles were pretty rough.  I was able to stick with Joe the whole way.  However, I felt super terrible.  I was holding in my puke the whole time, my legs were BEAT, emotionally I wasn't there because my friend died earlier in the week...I was tired.  It was just rough.  As we got to the halfway aid station, quitting was very high up in my mind.  I did not feel like I was going to be able to finish.  So I sat down for about five minutes and drank some mountain dew and tried to get back into the race mentally.  I decided that even if it meant crawling for 15 more miles....I was going to finish.  So I took off.  Surprisingly I felt great.  I eventually caught up to Joe and still felt great.  So, I ended up leaving Joe (his knee was hurting him).  I eventually crossed the finish line.  In my mind I finished around tenth place.  But, Cody ran over to me and told me that I was sixth!  I was super stoked.  It was a great race.  I'm super glad I did it!

Joe did great.  He didn't do as well as he usually does.  However, he's had leg issues and his goal today was to finish.  So, he finished!  Goal accomplished.  It was fun having him as a running buddy pretty much the whole time.

Cody did great especially with him being sick.  He took third place.  He took off at the first like he always does.  He was very happy with what he did considering the sickness he has been fighting.

Did stump hollow and the atv loops.  Went with Cody today.  Had my usual "morning sickness."  Usually after a good seven miles I feel pretty good and my sick feeling leaves.  Not today.  I felt completely miserable the whole time.  Cody was being nice.  I feel he could have smoked me but he didn't ditch me.  He kept telling me he was going at the pace he wanted.  What a gent.  On the final five miles I completely bonked.  Cody smoked me on the downhill.  I had no energy at all and felt so nasty.  Probably the worse feeling on any run. But, I finished.  I guess everyone has one of those days!

Took yesterday off to prepare for today.  Ran a later portion of the Bear 100 course with Cody.  We started at Franklin Basin.  Was going at a fairly comfortable yet fast pace (fast for me compared to the last two weeks).  Ran by some hunters on horses.  Nothing too out of the ordinary (nothing like shot gun pellets falling all around us).  Went down steep canyon (believe that is the name).  Got down to the Franklin Basin road and ended up crossing the river.  Went up Peter's Hollow (again, I think that was the name).  Eventually came up on the north side of Beaver Mountain.  Ran down and ended up at the Beaver Mountain Lodge.  Took a little break and ate some food.  Turned around and went back.  Instead of going up steep canyon, we turned and headed down the road back to the car (after Peter's hollow).  I felt so good.  Went at a great pace heading back from Beaver.  I can definitely tell that I'm pretty much back to normal

Today was Cody's big day.  I started around 1 p.m. with him at Right hand fork.  He came into the aid station a little behind what he was hoping for.  We took off and headed to temple fork.  On this section we walked a good majority of the up hill.  Cody's glute and left leg was in a lot of pain on the uphills.  But down hill he felt all right.  We got to Temple fork and he ate some soup and took a quick three minute break.  Then we headed up blind hollow towards Tony Grove.  Again we walked a good majority of the uphill.  Cody was in a lot of pain.  He kept talkng about how he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to finish.  He was pretty sure that he was going to drop at Tony Grove.  Then he joking said "I can force myself to run you know."  Then he took off at a good pace for a good ten seconds.  After that, something happened to the guy.  We got to the Aid, Beth gave him a massage, and we left.  He said he was feeling a lot better.  At this point it was pretty cold and snowy.  We ran most of this section.  I'm dang proud of that guy.  Eventually we go towards the bottom of this section.  Beth was waiting for us a little bit away from the end.  She had a camera and took pictures.  They had me run ahead to warn everyone that Cody was close.  We both got there, I said goodbye, then Joe and Cody took off.  About an hour later, Tim from england showed up, then him and I took off towards Logan River (from Franklin Basin).  Tim was really sore.  We walked pretty much all of this route.  Tim was way cold and he couldn't get moving fast enough to warm up.   About two miles from the aid, Tim told me he was going to drop.  He asked me to run ahead and radio the next aid station to inform his girlfriend he was done.  After I did that, I then ran three miles down the road to meet his girlfriend by the highway.  During this section, I spotted some "reflectors" off to the side with my head lamp.  They blinked at me then charge me.  Haha I was pretty scared for my life.  But I eventually saw they were cows (grateful they weren't moose or bears).  But I got to the road and had to wait about 20 minutes for his girlfriend.  The temperature was about 28 degrees at this point....I got way cold.  His girlfriend showed up at a very crucial time.  I was shaking and so so cold.  We went back to Logan River and I went and chilled in the First aid tent with Tim.  We were both trying to warm up.  Then they took me to Beaver Mountain so I could ride home with my friends who were waiting there for me. It was a great run!  I had fun.  I'm happy I was able to meet and run with Tim.  I'm looking forward to doing it next year!  Hopefully no snow and cold though.

What a day you had! Thanks again for helping me out. I loved the stories and entertainment. You had to suffer through my lowest points out on the course. Sorry about that...Glad you were there.

Hey thanks for letting me join you man. It was super fun even though you were suffering through some of it. I am looking forward to you possibly pacing me next year! And our potential grand canyon run!

Winter is definitely here.  Ran green canyon today.  Went at a fairly slow pace going up. After about twenty minutes, a blizzard took over the canyon.  Snow was blowing in my face.  Trail was muddy.  Trail quickly became covered with snow.  Was pretty difficult running back.  Hit rocks I couldn't see.  Rolled my ankle a little.  Slipped a few times.  About a mile from the end the snow finally slowed down.  I'm not looking forward to winter running :(

Did spring hollow with Cody.  We went at a fairly well pace.  I really liked this trail.  It was a very nice and steep trail.  The last mile of it was snowy and muddy so that made it interesting.  Cody is finally recovering from the bear.  Hopefully we'll be able to do the grand canyon run next month.  Plus today I got to use my fancy new Garmin (Cody's old Garmin...he upgraded to a new one).  So I'll be able to include some more information.  But it was a good run

Did the same run today that I did yesterday.  Today though I added a little.  I went past third dam to the wind caves trail head and went up to the caves.  I forgot how much of a beast that climb is.  My intentions were to run past the wind caves to the Birdneu Peak then down Green Canyon. But, I had no idea where anything was.  So, I quickly turned around and went back the way I came.  Originally when I began this run, I was only planning on doing green...9 miles.  So, I only brought half a botle of watter and no food.  So, I was feeling the effects of that on the way down from the caves.  Luckily, at third dam, a sweet old couple just got out of their car.  I walked up to them and asked if there was a place close by to get water.  Luckily, they had a bottle in the car they were able to give me.  That saved me.  The rest of the run was still fairly slow considering I had no food.  It was definitely a good work out though.

Today was a very interesting run.  I started out with my normal road run but then decided to head straight up towards green canyon instead of heading north on 1600 east.  As I got to the mouth of the canyon, I noticed a trail to the north and started following it.  I figured this trail would go along the base of the mountain and take me to hyde park.  But, it ended up going straight up the mountain.  Definitely hiked a good part of it.  Halfway up, it started snowing on me...but I kept going (didn't consider how hard it would be to come down).  I eventually got to the top.  Snow was coming down hard and the wind was blowing.  Couldn't see anything.  So I started heading down....I was skiing, slipping and falling and going all over the place.  My face was numb and I was soaking wet.  Eventually I got down and ran home.  It was a great climb and I can imagine it would have been a great view if there wasn't a blizzard

Today was definitely a slow day.  But, I climbed 4,410 feet in 7 miles.  So, I feel pretty good about what I accomplished today.  The first climb up was nice.  Stopped and took a couple pictures.  Passed a hiker on his way down who told me the hike took him about 2.5 hours.  I eventually got to just below the peak where all the snow was and turned around.  Once I got to the bottom, I turned around and headed back up.  That was a mental challenge.  The sun actually peaked out a little on my way up.  But overall, it was a great climb and work out.

A super icey, snowy and muddy run means a super slow run.  I started running the wind caves trail and got to the juction that takes you to Beardnue Peak.  I decided to explore and take it.  I should've known it would be super snowy considering the first part of the wind caves was pretty bad.  I hit snow and mud pretty quick on the other trail.  But, I was determined to get to the top.  After slipping and slowly climbing for a while, I decided it wasn't worth it and turned around.  The run back down that part sucked. I was slipping everywhere.  I got to the junction again and decided I might as well run to the caves.  The upper part of this trail wasn't too snowy....just muddy and no good.  So the way down on that part wasn't too fast either.  Once I got to the bottom, I decided to run on the road a little bit and stopped at eight miles.  Not the greatest run.  But, I was able to catch some sweet views.

Last saturday's run was a big day for me!  I made it over 1,000 miles on my brooks (I have been over 1,000 for a bit...that 1,000 miles is just since I've been on the blog).  Today I did a shorter run.  But, a lot more climbing.  Went up Saddleback/reflector peak (south face of green).  Very steep.  A few spots did some rock climbing.  Snowy at the top.  Great view of the valley. I'm mad I forgot my camera.

Did my partial road partial trail run.  Felt good at first but as soon as I got to the hill I got super tired.  Was up late last night because I went to the Jazz game.  So not much sleep knd of slowed me down.  Felt good though at the end.  Good day of climbing

I think my today's run is worthy to go in the fast miles category.  Definitely the fastest run I've had in a long time.  I think I'm finally getting better and recovering.  Ran the normal BST to just above 2 dam.  Except for mile 2, I kept my times under 7 minute miles.  Felt great.  Temperature wasn't too cold.

Made today a slower, shorter climb day.  Did the north face of green canyon twice.  Pretty tired from going hard last night.  A lot of people were out on the trail today.  I guess everyone is wanting to get a good work out before they stuff their face tonight for thanksgiving.  Saw an elk.  Good run

I had a hard time today trying to figure out if I should put my miles in the "slow" or "fast" category....just kidding.  Very slow run.  Went from first dam, took the BST to green, did the north face of green.  Went further up than usual.  Wanted to get to the summit so Cody and I did some rock climbing, snow shoing....it was pretty epic.  Great views.  Got to the top just in time to see the sun come up.  Way pretty.  My feet are pretty sore right now considering I'm completely destroying the bottom of my shoes.  Went to Al's right after and picked out a new pair of shoes for my mom to get me for chirstmas.  They felt wonderful when I tried them on..but then again, compared to how torn down my shoes are now, the crappiest brand of shoe would feel like I'm wearing a cloud.  With my work schedule I probably won't get a run tomorrow.  Final amount of climbing for the week.... 12,497 ft.  Not bad for five days and for just starting trail's this year.  I'm happy with that.

Ended up running today when I didn't think I'd have time.  Right after work I was planning on heading to the BYU USU game.  But, I had about an hour so I drove to a random trail and ran six miles.  It was actually a good area.  Great climbing.  Next summer when the snow is gone, the trail branched off south of me at one point and kept going up the southern mountain.  Looked like a good killer climb.  Finished off the week strong with 14,597 ft of climbing.  I'd say that is a good week.

Did my apartment to green again.  This time though I didn't go as far up and made up the miles by donig the face of green.  As I was starting the face of green I noticed a familiar truck...Mr. Cody Draper.  He was pretty far ahead of me though.  As I was about 5-10 minutes from the top, he passed me coming down.  But the champ turned around and finished it with me.  Coming down was fun....my super old shoes were not gripping anything.  Got some nice skiing in

Did a road run to break in my new trail shoes.  Let's just say this....until you get a new pair of shoes, you really don't realize how much your old shoes are making your body ache...and slowing you down.  I felt great on this run.  I love these shoes so far.  Today I ran up to Dave's grave.  It felt good to sit there and think about him. Then I ran to Hyde Park.  Forgot to start my watch til .50 miles away from the apartment.  It was a good run
