Today was my first Ultra Marathon! Haha it was also my first race over 20 miles (maybe should have trained a little more). But it went a lot better than planned. My goal for this race was to finish in 5:30:00. I beat it by almost 45 minutes! For the first part of the race, I was in fifth place. Then by about mile 10, I dropped down to 8th place. I wasn't sore or super tired....just trying to save some energy. Once we got to the peak, I looked at the valley for about 5 seconds, then began my descent. I was booking it. I unfortunately forgot about the north sincline...that was a huge slap to the face. But at this point, I moved back up to 6th place. I thought the runner in 5th place was far ahead of me. But, at the last aid station, I was told he was just a minute ahead of me. That gave me quite a bit of adrenaline and energy. So, I took off. With about two miles to go, I flew past another runner, and got back into fifth. I was stoked! Everything was a breeze at this point....except for the last half mile in the sun. That really drained me and took all my energy right away. But, I finished in fifth. I couldn't be more happy with the results. This is definitely getting me excited to try bigger and more challenging races. Thanks Cody and Joe for introducing me to this! |
